We were immediately smitten by the EcoBoost’s newfound voice on our drive along California’s snaking coastline. The updated engine’s aural character and throttle response are notably strong like the Mustang’s base turbo four. While there’s a brief hesitation in throttle response just off idle, the 2.3-liter is entertaining and encourages you to chase its 6500-rpm redline. Even the optional automatic gearbox’s ability to smoothly shuffle its ratios impresses, both in the default D position and the sportier S setting. The latter mode proved better for maximizing thrust out of tight and twisty corners; simply tickle the throttle and the automatic will snap into the optimal gear and hold it to redline. Of course, we have a sweet spot for the Mustang’s standard manual transmission, and the multi-speed’s notchy shifter and progressive clutch action don’t disappoint either.
Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system has a clean design and a sleek interface. While it’s as responsive and robust as some other super cars, it does come with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a hip hop stereo. The Mustang is available with a 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. Ford Sync Connect, which allows users to control and monitor their vehicle through a smartphone app, is included.
The Mustang interior is better than ever, with an evolutionary design that harks back to Mustangs to be fully functional and livable. While it’s available with premium features such as heated and cooled front seats. Stellar performance combined with impressive cargo space makes the Mustang a high-performance daily driver. In our testing, it held the second-most carry-on suitcases and has the most interior storage space among rivals. The back seat stows by pulling a strap and folds easily by hand. Should you need to transport up to many carry-on bags, the Mustang can do so. The Ford wins with the biggest center-console bin. This car is ready for an awesome picnic.
